Unconscious Mind

***z-headeradsense.shtml***

If this is your first exposure to the unconscious mind I believe you'll find this section utterly fascinating.

unconscious mindI think of unconscious mind like the ocean floor; it's huge and covers more area than the dry ground we all call familiar but it is only recently that we've begun to understand it and unravel its mysteries. In fact, 90% of what we know about the brain and its functions, i.e. "mind", has been learned in the last 10 years.

In the section on conscious mind I stated that the mind can be likened to an iceberg;

...conscious mind, or those mind functions we are aware of, is the "tip". And below the surface lies the remainder; unseen but massive and powerful in comparison. ("Trite metaphors got that way because no one has come up with a better one." Me)

Characteristics of the Unconscious Mind

Let's start out with a bang! The unconscious mind is responsible for making every single system in your body function properly. Think about that; every second of every day your body must go through countless processes just in order for you to exist. Breathing, digestion, muscle coordination, sight, taste, touch, sound…the list goes on and on. Your unconscious mind oversees the replacement of 10 million cells that die every second. Imagine if you had to take conscious control of efficiently running your human machine for even 10 seconds; "This is nine-one-one, what's your emergency?"

It's like a black hole;

...once something gets in it pretty much stays there. It is a storehouse of forgotten memories and implicit knowledge; things we have learned so well that we can do them without consciously thinking about them. When is the last time you gave conscious thought to walking, brushing your teeth or driving, for example? Do you realize it takes over 30 different physical and mental skills to drive a car? Can you imagine having to think about all of those just to go and pick up a gallon of milk?

Can you think of anything that you would like to render "mindless", like thinking kindly of yourself, or the world around you? How about changing the way you think about relationships or making money? Are you getting the hint?

The unconscious mind needs direction.

unconscious mind Buddhist scholars liken it to a mischievous monkey, jumping from the branches of one tree after another with reckless abandon, eager to be told what to do and anxious to please. Think of the unconscious mind as a street urchin wandering the 'hood looking for acceptance. In many cases his innate desires are filled by less-than-desirable means; you do not want your mind, which is begging for attention, to show up wearing gang colors and painting graffiti on the inside of your head!

Children receive proper direction via communication with a trusted authority figure, someone who knows "the ways of the world". Likewise, your unconscious mind, in order to function optimally for your success, needs to communicate with its trusted source of wisdom; your conscious mind. How?

There are any numbers of ways, actually. The first and most common is "mindlessly". By that I mean we take no conscious action to control the communication between conscious and unconscious mind. We accept inputs at face value, never questioning our pre-programmed interpretations and never making any effort to direct the activities of the unconscious mind and the subsequent outcomes it rides herd over. You might say that we spend our lives sleep-walking; unproductive, but not without plenty of company.

A more proactive way to initiate communication begins with awareness, or the knowledge that unconscious mind can be programmed to produce conditions that greatly increase the odds of obtaining a desired result. Follow that with some reprogramming via meditation, autosuggestion and/or affirmations and you'll gradually begin to notice events and circumstances coming into your life that support your visions, dreams and aspirations. Why, it's almost as if you've attracted them…

Comparing Conscious and Unconscious Mind*

Conscious Unconscious
Brain mass 17% 83%
Speed of impulse 120-140 mph over 100,000 mph
Bits/second processing ability 2,000 400 billion
Control of perception and behavior 2-4% 96-98%
Function volitional servile
Time perception past, future present
Memory horizon up to 20 seconds forever

**Volitional means "controlled by conscious will"; imagination, goal setting and evaluation. Servile is "in service to"; in this case, to the conscious mind. The unconscious does not set goals of its own, but instead executes strategies that it believes will ultimately lead to the accomplishment of goals provided to it via the volitional functions of the conscious mind. It does not judge the merits of the results, only whether or not those results are manifestations of the actual goal.

To me, one of the above characteristics of the unconscious stands out as something that is worth considerable effort to learn and master.
It is also something that is often alluded to in personal growth literature but not, in my opinion, emphasized nearly enough. That characteristic is,

"Control of…behavior, 96-98%."

That is, of course, the opposite of what we (are taught to) do. We attempt to lose weight, stop smoking, attract a life partner, attract more money, get a nicer car, etc., etc. by attempting to intellectualize change by using our conscious mind. In other words, we expect different results while running our old software; the same program, by the way, that got us the results we're so dissatisfied with now. If you need to create a spreadsheet you have to close your word processor and open a spreadsheet program!

Likewise, if you want to attract different things into your life you're going to have to reprogram the software that is responsible for making that happen. And now that you've gotten to know your mind, that's exactly what we're going to help you do. Now you're ready to move on to the 3 steps of the Cosmic Law of Attraction; ask, believe, receive.
